The Civil Wars Grammy, Joy Williams & John Paul White perform in Pegasus Records in Florence, AL, In the past year, the name The Civil Wars has become very popular across the nation. With the duo winning two Grammys Sunday night, that road to fame continues, and it’s making the Shoals area very proud.

The singing and songwriting Civil Wars are making it big once again. The duo, made up of Joy Williams and Shoals native John Paul White, won a Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for their song “Barton Hollow”. They picked up a 2nd Grammy for Best Folk Album for their debut album “Barton Hollow” released last February.

“I’ve had the honor and the privilege to meet a whole lot of musicians,” said Eli Flippen, owner of Pegasus Records in Florence. “I can honestly say that John and Joy are probably two of the nicest, sweetest people you’ll ever meet, and it couldn’t happen to anybody better.”

It was just one year ago that the duo performed in Pegasus Records on the day they released their first album in Florence.

However, that’s not the only place the duo has been spotted in the Shoals. They shop and have performed in Billy Reid on Court Street as well.

“It’s kind of normal for us,” said Graham Heard, the e-commerce director for Billy Reid. “Billy and John Paul are great friends, so he’s in here quite a bit. He’s done a lot for us in the past and John Paul and Joy have played in the store for some of our events, so it’s kind of normal for us to see them come in randomly and shop a little bit.”

John Paul White actually sported a Billy Reid tux during his Sunday night performance.

“We’re flattered and honored to say the least,” said Heard. “John Paul could’ve worn anything to the Grammy’s, and he decided to wear our tux and we’re very honored by that and glad to have him do it.”

Last year The Civil Wars were also nominated for a Country Music Television Video of the Year Award for Barton Hollow, a CMA award for Duo of the Year and AMA awards for Best New/Emerging Artist and Duo/Group of the year.
