Texas Forest Service, (AP) — Texas authorities say a volunteer firefighter was “overcome by smoke, fell in a ditch and was consumed” by the blaze he was battling near Eastland.

The town is about 130 west of Dallas. Wildfires have been sweeping across the drought-stricken state for more than a week.

The Texas Forest Service says they’ve burned about 655 square miles.
