Teresa Scanlan Miss Nebraska, (AFP) – A pianist of 17 years a small town in Nebraska was crowned Miss America on Saturday the 90th, inheriting the coveted title in a symbolic show, but desperate attempts to regain its importance.

Teresa Scanlan, the youngest, said her age would help the competition to regain some of its relevance in popular culture as she went to campaign against eating disorders.

“It just shows that no matter where you come from, you can accomplish anything you want,” she said at a press conference post-event. “I’m really excited that he has no importance how old you are and to get some new girls in the program. ”

Scanlan age was clearly a problem for judges in their deliberations, and several of them before it.

“I must say I was skeptical about having a girl of 17 years as Miss America, but it’s a young woman of 17 who is very knowledgeable about current events, pop culture, fine shown on its platform, “said Marc Cherry, creator of the television series Desperate Housewives. “I was sold.”

Scanlan received a diamond tiara and a purse of 50,000 and plans to use to help pay for a law degree.

She said she hopes to be an attorney for criminal prosecution and potentially an elected official. She hails from a town of 8,000 people where she is one of seven children born to the daughter of Yugoslavian immigrants who fled the communist revolution.

During the talent portion of the show, she played Whitewater chopsticks on the piano, the player only among the 10 finalists who performed.

In the question and answer portion of the competition, which immediately preceded her coronation, Wikileaks asked the beauty queen her opinion on how the U.S. should deal with the publication of classified documents.

She was vague about what should be done, but it refers to actions Wikileaks “espionage”.

During the press conference, she stated that the release of thousands of cables was “a huge national security issue. There are areas where freedom of speech becomes a national security issue. We must be very careful with that. ”

The gay teenager is now the flagship of a legendary event that has had hard times in recent years that the public is more interested in the rival Miss USA pageant.

Declining ratings had led the ABC to dump the competition in 2005; he released the much lower ratings on pay television networks. This year, ABC gave another blow to a mass audience.

The Miss America Organization said it hands millions in grants to young American women and away from this kind of controversy sordid tabloid style for which Miss United States is known.

“America loves a story back,” said Stan Haskell, president of the Miss America Organization. “When you understand how education and scholarship and talent and service are all up front edge, there was nothing to do but return. ”

In honor of the 90th anniversary of the pageant, 47 former Miss Americas gathered on stage before crowning Scanlan.

The most controversial – 1945 Bess Myerson winner, who was later convicted of tax evasion, and 1984 winner Vanessa Williams, who was dethroned when nde* photographs of her emerged after her coronation – were not present.
