Tassimo Coffee Maker 37 Reports Of Burn Injuries, About 900,000 of Tassimo’s Single Cup Coffee Makers sold in Canada are being recalled after dozens of the plastic coffee cartridges they use burst, then sprayed and burned those near the machines, Health Canada announced Thursday.

The recall also affects about 1.7 million coffee cartridges sold in Canada. The concern is that the plastic cartridge – or “T Disc” – will explode, spewing hot liquid and coffee grounds or tea leaves onto someone using the brewer or standing near it.

About 835,000 Tassimo Single-Cup Brewers have also been recalled in the U.S. by the Consumer Product Safety Division.

There have been 140 reports of machines spraying hot liquids onto users in North America, including 37 reports of second-degree burn injuries. Sixty-one of those were from consumers in Canada, but Health Canada said it has received no reports of Canadians being injured.

One incident involved a 10-year-old girl from Minnesota who received second-degree burns to her face and neck and had to be hospitalized, the agency said.

Product model numbers affected under the Bosch brand name include:

Their date codes were FD 8806 through 9109.

The T Discs

Under the Tassimo Professional brand name, model number TAS6512CUL, with date codes FD8905 through 9109, are being recalled.

On February 2, a statement on Tassimo Canada’s Facebook page asked retailers and customers to stop selling and using certain defective espresso discs as a result of a manufacturing defect, citing burn hazards as a main concern.

These discs were sold in packs of eight or 16, in a variety pack, or with milk discs as part of the company’s Cappuccino, Latte, and Skinny Latte products.

In this case, only the discs that have code information ending between 11213 and 12020 are affected. The information is printed on the foil lid of every espresso disc and on a side panel of the foil package.

Consumers are being told to immediately stop using the recalled products, and to contact the Tassimo Recall website or Tassimo hotline to obtain a refund.

The company can be contacted toll-free at 1-866-918-8763 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET Monday to Friday, and between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on Saturday.
