Tampa Bay Lightning Concert Coolio, The Tampa Bay Lightning announced today that rap artist Coolio is set to perform a post-game concert immediately following the team’s game versus the New York Islanders on Saturday, March 24, as part of the Lightning Concert Series, presented by Volkswagen. The concert is free with the purchase of a ticket to that night’s game and will be held on the west plaza stage of the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
Coolio began rapping from a young age and performed at many local Los Angeles rap contests as a youth. He recorded two singles in the late 1980s, and in 1994 released his first album titled It Takes a Thief. The album contained the song “Fantastic Voyage,” which became Coolio’s breakout song. The song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the biggest rap singles of the year. The album received praise for bringing a humorous and lighthearted perspective to often violent and profane themes of typical gangster rap.
After the success of his debut album, Coolio became a legitimate rap star. In 1995, he made a song for the movie Dangerous Minds and called it “Gangsta’s Paradise.” The song would become one of the most successful rap songs of all time, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks. It was the number one single for all genres, and was a global hit, as it reached number one in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Austria, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand. “Gangsta’s Paradise” won a Grammy for Best Solo Rap Performance in 1996 and is track that Coolio is best known for.
