Kdka School Closings, Springfield was covered by more than three inches of snow Monday night and Tuesday afternoon, causing school closures and traffic accidents.

After a morning commutes with snowy roads, high winds move through Tuesday afternoon and evening, creating an evening shuttle also challenges. Several schools in the region have also postponed sporting events and other events throughout the day and Tuesday evenings.

Due to hazardous road conditions, many rural schools have also canceled classes for Wednesday.

Just before 09:30, a soldier from Illinois was injured in an accident on Highway 55 in Logan County. The soldier was transported to hospital in Springfield.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Terry Carter said he had no information on the identity of the soldier or the extent of the injury Tuesday. He said the information would be available today.

Springfield police and members of the Sangamon County Sheriff responded to several traffic accidents related to weather, although the number was not available Tuesday evening.

Forecasters for the National Weather Service in Lincoln at Springfield have received 3.1 inches of snow, while Chatham reported 5 inches. Lincoln has received 2.8 inches and 6 inches capped at Jacksonville.

Winter weather advisory continued until 6 pm today for blowing snow, according to James Auten, a meteorologist in Lincoln. Scattered snow showers were expected to continue as a low-pressure system moved through the region.

Auten said less than an inch of additional snow was expected, but gusts of wind could take up to 25 mph. He warned that the action of the winds could be expected to cause blowing and drifting snow on north-south roads.

Low tonight is expected at about 5 degrees, Auten said. Temperatures are expected to warm to 19 degrees Thursday.
