Biggest Box Office Flops

Biggest Box Office Flops, Disney have announced that they expect ‘John Carter’ to become one of the biggest flops in cinema history, with an almighty $200 million loss.

BBC News reports that the film cost an estimated $250 million to make, with an additional $100 million thrown away on marketing. It has made $184 million at the worldwide box office, with cinema owners pocketing a sizeable portion.

The downturn could result in an overall loss of $80-120 million for Disney in the first quarter of 2012, though the releases of ‘Brave’ and ‘The Avengers’ later in the year are expected to bring the studio’s bank balance back into the black.

Despite flopping in the US, ‘John Carter’ didn’t actually do too badly at all in the UK, topping the box office charts in its first weekend of release with a healthy £1.96m gross.

Reviews have been lukewarm, with New York’s Time Out calling it “deadly dull”, and Entertainmentwise saying: “Thematically and narratively, it’s a mess”.
