World Humanitarian DayWorld Humanitarian Day, The UN General Assembly established world Humanitarian Day in 2008 to honor humanitarian workers Sergio Vieira de Mello. The UN designated August 19 as the World Humanitarian Day, and the first celebration took place in 2009.

But the lack of coordination among aid organizations has made the day less than a success in Lahore, Pakistan President Relief Mujtaba told The Tribune Imran Express on Thursday.

According to Irman that the lack of coordination often hinders the effective delivery of relief efforts. Imran said aid organizations and volunteer work to be prepared to deal with the crisis at all times.

Imran went on to say that more than 800 volunteers participated in aid to Pakistan relief efforts following the earthquake in October 2005. The number of volunteers working with the nongovernmental organization rose to 6,000 during last year’s floods, he said.

According to the map of Pakistan Flood Response, a Chamber of Commerce of the U.S. initiative-working document by various organizations during the flood of 2010, there are at least 130 non-governmental organizations committed to the relief and rehabilitation efforts in areas affected by flooding. Of the 130 NGOs, 90 were working in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa, the largest in the region affected by the flood.

To prepare volunteers to cope with any emergency, Imran and Sahara for Life Trust chief marketing officer Farooq Baloch said he had organized courses in first aid training before sending volunteers on the ground, The Express Tribune reports.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization is preparing a video contest to encourage global production of more young people to volunteer for humanitarian work.

Ishrat Rizvi, the National Communication Officer at the World Health Organization in Pakistan, told The Tribune Express video presentations on “how to counter the humanitarian crisis” can be done through YouTube. The top three videos will be selected from the five regions where the 193 UN states have been divided. The winners will be taken to the UN headquarters in New York for three days to observe the operations of the agency.
