Women's Equality DayWomen’s Equality Day, President Obama has declared August 26 – which marks the 91st anniversary of the constitutional amendment giving women the vote – as “Women’s Equality Day.”

In an announcement Thursday by the White House, Obama said: “I call upon the people of the United States to celebrate women’s achievements and renew our commitment to the goal of gender equality in this country,” according to Reuters.

“The 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States overthrew the last formal obstacle to the emancipation of women in our country and to the women of America to make their voices heard in the corridors of power,” said Obama.

Hilda Solis Labor Secretary reiterated the president’s statement, crediting the defenders of the rights of women like Susan B. Principles Anthony and Alice Paul to lay the groundwork for change leaders and women closer to equality.

“We have risen to leadership positions in all areas of American life, but perhaps our greatest impact can be felt in the U.S. workforce,” Solis said in a statement.

“Today, we are a country drawing below two wars and the recovery of another major financial crisis, and once again it is women who are leading this country again,” he said.
