WNEM TV5 Saginaw, The Saginaw Post Office Processing Facility, what Saginaw residents call the main post office on S. Washington Ave., will be moving their processing operations to the Michigan Metroplex facility in Pontiac.

The Wheeler Street processing facility will also shift work to the Pontiac Metroplex.  The decision was announced on Wednesday and means that Saginaw will lose a combined 90 to 100 jobs. The number of employees picked up by Metroplex and the number laid off or moved elsewhere will be determined after discussions with bargaining units.

In September, the post office started the discussion of a possible closing after they studied the issue. Another 264 post offices across the country were also studied.

It was determined that operations in Saginaw, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lansing and Iron Mountain would be moved.

The U.S. Congress put a hold on any job cuts or moves until May 15.

The Saginaw facility will still sell stamps, and mail and packages can be shipped from the counter. The closure does mean, however, that mail will no longer be delivered by the next day in the local area as the office got an exemption to have it delivered in two to three days.

Sabrina Todd, the Public Relations person for the Greater Michigan Region of the postal service, told TV5 the post office is taking a look at the “seriousness of our financial situation.”
