60 Minutes Tonight, 60 Minutes tonight features an interview with Magnus Carlsen, new ways to help the long term unemployed, and looks at how depression drugs work. The show opens with Scott Pelley saying the length of time people have been unemployed is at levels not seen in many years.

We see people who have been unemployed for a long time and how Joe Carbone is trying to get these people back into the workforce. Joe says long term unemployment causes major changes in our self esteem and our outlook on life. He has over 12,000 people in his program that have exhausted all of their unemployment benefits.

The program works with these people to get them a new career. Joe’s program, called platform to employment, shows these people how things have changed in the new digital era. It teaches them how to deal with the way employers are biased towards people who have been unemployed for a long time.

This program teaches how to use social networking and the internet to get their skills noticed. Platform to employment has an internship program for people who go through the course. It allows them to show employers that they can do the job. After 5 months, Platform to employment has managed to get over half of the people in the program a job. Not just a small job but a new career.

The next segment has Leslie Stahl talking to Irving Kirsch from Harvard Medical school and he says that people on anti depressants are seeing success because of the placebo effect and not the chemicals in them. He says sugar pills can and do work miracles. We see a study of fake knee surgery and the people who had the fake surgery actually did just as well as the people who had their knees fixed.

He says his research on depression showed that patients had success using placebos and actually show that there is no benefit to the chemicals in anti depressants. He said the only place the real drug worked better was in severe cases.
