The American crow is the bird most commonly found carrying the virus and the Western Scrub Jay, the house finch and American Robin. This year, 18 species of birds were found with the virus.

Two dead birds tested positive were found in Chatsworth, one in Northridge, Canoga Park, Sun Valley, West Hills and Van Nuys.

This is the first time this year that incidents of West Nile virus was found in Sun Valley, Canoga Park and Canyon Country.

In 2010, more dead birds tested positive for the virus in Northridge, in 2009, Van Nuys hot spots of the valley and the village.

No birds with West Nile virus was found in Studio City in the last two years.

Crystal Brown, public information officer for the vector control district, said, “Mosquito season is not over. Weekend Labor Day marks the end of summer vaction, but the West Nile virus remains a threat as long as temperatures remain high. ”

Last week, the Vector Control District found 23 more WNV positive dead birds, 29 mosquito samples and six positive sentinel chickens show antibodies against the virus. The chickens are found primarily in the Sepulveda Basin, zip code 91436.
