Wendi Deng Interpreter For Rupert Murdoch, The interview with Rupert Murdoch, and his wife Wendi Deng took place on Chinese TV programme Dialogue on June 27, ahead of his appearance on Tuesday at a Select Committee of MPs investigating phone hacking.

It was the first time the couple had accepted an interview together.

The 80-year-old media mogul said it was when Ms Deng acted as his interpreter during a business trip to China in 1998 that he fell in love with her.

“Who wouldn’t fall in love with such a beautiful woman like her?” asked Mr Murdoch.

The pair married in 1999 after Mr Murdoch divorced his wife of 31 years.

The couple have two children together, Grace and Chloe.

“She has taught our two little girls to speak perfect mandarin,” said Mr Murdoch. “Everybody at home speaks mandarin except me. So they only tell me what they think I need to know.”

Ms Deng admitted to being very strict at home. “In Chinese culture, if I am strict to you and criticise you, it means I love you.”

To which Mr Murdoch replied: “Oh yes, she is very tough, very tough.”

Ms Deng, the daughter of a factory director in Guangzhou, China, joined News Corp’s Star TV as an intern in 1996, shortly after earning an MBA from Yale.

She became a Twitter and internet sensation earlier in the week after she leapt to the defence of her husband when he was hit by a pie of shaving foam during the Select Committee hearing.

Upon her arrival to the United States, Murdoch briefly lived with Jake and Joyce Cherry and attended university. Joyce Cherry suspected her husband was having an affair with Murdoch (30 years his junior) and demanded she leave the house. Jake Cherry soon followed and moved in with her. The two married in 1990. Murdoch and Cherry’s marriage lasted 2 years and 7 months before they were legally divorced, but he would later explain they only stayed together for 4 or 5 months, after which he learned of the affair Murdoch had with David Wolf, a man closer to her age. She had obtained a green card through her marriage to Cherry.

In 1997, she met Rupert Murdoch at a company party in Hong Kong. They married in 1999, less than three weeks after his divorce from ex-wife Anna Maria Torv Murdoch Mann was finalized. Wendi and Rupert Murdoch live in Manhattan with their two daughters: Grace Helen (born 2001) and Chloe (born 2003).

She counter-attacked Jonathan May-Bowles who pied her husband during a highly publicized testimony before a British parliamentary committee in connection with the News International phone hacking scandal. Her actions gained her press attention. May-Bowles was sentenced to serve a six-week sentence at Wandsworth Prison in London.
