Wagga Wagga Floods, TS-EX- flood crisis in Wagga Wagga appears to be easing, with new predictions that the flood peak will not pose a risk to the city’s levee system.

The Bureau of Meteorology is now estimating the Murrumbidgee River will reach 10.6m at the NSW Riverina town at 6pm tonight.

This is below the levee’s design capacity of 10.7m, and well below the 10.9m peak forecast earlier today.

The revised figures give some hope to some 9000 residents who are waiting to return to their homes after an evacuation order was issued late last night for central Wagga.

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell declared a state of emergency for flood ravaged Wagga Wagga after visiting the city earlier on Tuesday.

He announced on his return to Sydney that following a recommendation from the Natural Disaster Council he had declared a state emergency in what is the state’s largest inland city.
