Vancouver CanucksVancouver Canucks, The Vancouver Canucks played their penultimate game prior to the Christmas break on Wednesday night, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 at Rogers Arena in a clash of Western Conference powers.

The game was typified by back-and-forth action and swings in momentum. The Canucks, on goals by Chris Higgins and Cody Hodgson, scored 19 seconds apart midway through the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead after Detroit had carried the bulk of the play in the early going. Those goals appeared to spur the Canucks into action. The two teams traded goals before the first period was out, giving the home team a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.

The Canucks dominated stretches of the second period, playing their puck-possession game to perfection. Drew Miller then scored for Detroit with just over three minutes left in the second period, against the run play, to bring Detroit within one. However, again against the run of play, the Canucks scored a shorthanded goal at 3:30 of the third period to regain their two goal lead, which would not be relinquished primarily owing to the outstanding play of goaltender Roberto Luongo.

After Detroit scored their second goal, they carried on to dominate Vancouver in the third period, outshooting Vancouver 16-4 in the final frame. Total shots ended up 40-25 for Detroit, who gave the Canucks fits at many points in the game.
