Van Gogh BiographyVan Gogh Biography, A Dutch expert Vincent Van Gogh has poured cold water on the theory outlined in a new biography of Dutch painter did not commit suicide but was fired accidentally.

“Van Gogh: The Life” by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, was published on Monday, and coverage of the media has focused on his claim that Van Gogh may have been accidentally shot by two boys who then tried to protect.

The painter, who suffered from depression, cut off part of one ear, committed to an asylum and is thought to have ended his life at age 37. He died in 1890, two days after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest.

Leo Jansen, curator of the Van Gogh in Amsterdam, said there were still unresolved issues about apparent suicide of Van Gogh, including why the artist decided to take his life and what happened to the weapon was never found.

“Naifeh and Smith re-evaluate the facts and present the hypothesis that two children were involved in a mysterious incident that led to the fatal shot,” he said in a statement issued by the museum.

Jansen called the theory of “interesting” but not conclusive.

“The Van Gogh Museum … believe that, ultimately, would be premature to rule out suicide as the cause of death.”

He added that the drive back, about 1,000 pages, “represents an important contribution to our understanding of the life of Vincent van Gogh and work with interesting perspectives.”
