“My left foot is bleeding,” Djokovic said afterwards. “These things happen all the time that flow like me.”

Elsewhere, world number two Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray reached the number one quarter-final after winning their respective matches in the lower half of delay in the draw.

Defending champion Nadal beat Gilles Muller in his fourth round match, which resumed at 3-0 to Muller after the game was abandoned due to rain Wednesday.

Nadal complained of being made to play on the slippery court on Wednesday, with players managing just 15 minutes of play before rain stopped. Nadal was a very focused, which resumed on Thursday though. Finally, the power with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-1 6-2.

Earlier, fourth seed Andy Murray began a day of action at Flushing Meadows with a 6-2 6-3 6-3 win over Donald Young. Now they will face American John Isner in the quarterfinals after defeating Gilles Simon 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-6 (7-2) and 7-6 (7-4) in what proved to be a thriller.
