Harvard University is engaged in the first place tie with Princeton University, followed by Yale and Columbia University.

California Institute of Technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania round out the top 10 in a five-way tie.

The top 20 universities changed little since last year, although the University of Chicago rose four points, forcing Dartmouth University 10.

Other big jumps are the University of Miami, which jumped nine points No. 38 and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which fell to number 50.

In the category of National Liberal Arts colleges, Williams College took first place once again at Amherst College. These schools, followed by Swarthmore College, are classified as top liberal arts colleges offering at least half of their degrees in liberal arts.

Schools like the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, George Mason University and Indiana University-Purdue University topped the list of up-and-coming schools. These represent the universities “make most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, and student life.”

The magazine ranks schools according to criteria that include the funding of the university, the average SAT scores of incoming students, evaluation of administrators at similar institutions, student retention, alumni giving, the graduation rates, high levels of school counselor of the universities, and more.

The most important factor in the ranking is the evaluation of the reputation of the school by peer institutions and advisors of the university admissions, amounting to 22.5 percent.

U.S. News & World Report has compiled these annual rankings since 1983. Some scholars agree with the ratings and suggest that school officials look for ways to see better in the standings.
