Unique Love Stories, The Las Cruces Community Theater brings a unique and poignant true life love story to the stage with William Nicholson’s “Shadowlands,” premiering today at the LCCT Theatre on the Downtown Mall.
“Shadowlands” is based on the relationship of C.S. Lewis, the world-renowned philosopher, Oxford College professor and author of “The Chronicles of Narnia,” who meets and befriends American poet Joy Gresham.

They marry and discover that Joy is terminally ill with cancer.

“The story also deals with his struggle with personal pain and grief: Lewis preaches that one should endure suffering with patience but finds that the simple answers he had preached no longer apply when Joy suffers from cancer,” according to a synopsis provided by the LCCT.

The production stars Mike Cook as Lewis and Margie Brouhard as Gresham. “This is a play I have been drawn to for over five years and I am just now finally getting the chance to direct it. Mike Cook has always been perfect in my eyes for the role of Lewis, so casting him was a no-brainer for me. He is one of the hardest working actors I know. Margie Brouhard is a strong and talented actress who is very capable of finding the balance of humor and seriousness that Joy deserves. My cast is full of some of the finest actors in town,” said the play’s director, Patrick Payne.
