Union City, Tennessee, Titan Tire of Union City, a subsidiary of Titan International (TWI), has acquired the physical assets of Goodyear’s Union City closed tire facility in Tennessee, US, for $9m.

Titan said it notified Goodyear of its interest in some of the equipment at Union City shortly after the tire maker was selling the assets.

The purchase includes the 2.1 million sq ft building on approximately 480 acres of land and most of the equipment, Titan said.

The company said that it will not build radial passenger or SUV tires at the plant and agreed to scrap all curing presses and tire building equipment that Goodyear requests to be scrapped.

Goodyear has until June 2012 to remove all equipment it wishes to retain, and Titan will have immediate access to the Union City plant to inspect all Banbury mixing equipment and steel and fabric calender lines.

Titan International chairman and CEO Maurice Taylor said the company has not yet decided how it plans to utilize the Tennessee location except to warehouse farm and OTR tires and to have a single equipment rebuilding operation for the machines.

“The decision on whether Titan will keep the equipment in Union City or move the equipment to other Titan tire factory locations will not be made until mid 2012,” Taylor said.
