HOLIDAYSHOPPING_aThe stores at the South Shore Plaza opened before dawn, hoping to catch the early bird shoppers. The shoppers lined up, hoping to catch a bargain.

“We did pretty good today,” said Debbie Hernon of Quincy. “I got a bunch of candles, six candles for 60 bucks.”

Cheryl Bambery of Braintree grabbed a coat for 40 percent off. “I just got a jacket that was supposed to be $100. I got it for $60, a great deal.”

Retailers are offering discounts of 25, 30, 40 even 50 percent off. There are VIP packages for those who spend, and even free cookies. Even Santa was bright-eyed at 5am, but that’s nothing for a guy who circles the globe in one night.

“(It’s) very easy for me, very easy,” said Santa.

Kent Coffey of Brockton dressed as an elf to lure customers into his store. He admits it’s a brave man who can dress in tights.

“Yeah, I have no shame,” he said.

Surprisingly, a lot of the early shoppers were kids. Fourteen-year-old Therese Bambery of Braintree got to the mall at 5am. The reason she’s up so early… “getting good deals for Christmas.”

Therese got herself a pair of Ugg boots, and they came with a free pair of $60… well, we can’t tell you, because they’re for her brother for Christmas and we’d hate to ruin the surprise.

Mary Keough and her daughter Jennifer posed for their annual picture with Santa.

“I asked Santa for a grandchild,” said Mary.

What did her daughter say?

“T.B.D.” (to be determined) Jennifer said with a laugh.

Retailers are cautiously optimistic. They say Veterans Day weekend sales are a good indicator of how the holiday shopping season will go. This year they said they were packed Veterans Day weekend.
