Northern Michigan University, (CNN) – Northern Michigan University officials say the situation is under control “after a telephone threat against students, faculty and other invited a lock on the morning Marquette, Michigan, on campus Wednesday.

But officials continued to urge students to stay in their dormitories and visitors to stay away from the campus until further notice. The university administration closed at 8:20 Wednesday after campus police found a telephone call that had threatened to attack NMU.

Cindy Paavola, director of the University community relations, said campus police took the threat seriously, prompting the administration to close the university as a precautionary measure. “The caller threatened that there would be harm to students, faculty, staff and administrators,” Paavola said. “They did not identify specific individuals, but it was a threat large and we take it seriously. ”

“We do not know the seriousness of the threat because we have not caught up with this person. Rather than being sorry, we’ll be safe,” said Paavola.

State and local law enforcement are assisting university police in the investigation, she added.

Michigan mirroring the national trend of more than half of the universities reported a drop in giving: among colleges and universities of Michigan 22 who responded to the survey, 14 reported decreases, while 8 have reported an increase in charitable donations.

“The economy has not yet regained pre-recession levels,” said Ann E. Kaplan, director of investigation for the Council for Aid to Education. “Just take a little more time for people to make large donations that will occur if historical trends are any indication. ”

Between 2009 and 2010, the most dramatic declines in Michigan charitable donations were at Northern Michigan University, Lawrence Tech University and Calvin College, with contributions dipping 55 percent, 52 percent and 34 percent respectively.

The largest increases were Northwestern Michigan College, Delta College and Alma College, with charitable donations of up to 54 percent, 40 percent and 35 percent respectively.

Among the largest state universities, charitable donations rose 14 percent to Wayne State University in Detroit, but declined by 21 percent at Michigan State University and 4 percent at the University of Michigan.

However, UM ranked 19th among the nation’s first 20 fundraisers, awareness and 252 million in 2010, about 21 / 2 times more than MSU, who rose and 96.8 million.
