Tropical Storm Sean, Tropical Storm Sean, the 18th named system of the Atlantic hurricane season, may grow into a hurricane as it moves between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda.Sean’s winds may increase to 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour today, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 1 a.m. New York time. The system’s maximum winds are 65 mph, up from 50 mph yesterday. It is located about 390 miles west-southwest of Bermuda.

“Some strengthening is expected in the next 48 hours,” according to the center. “Sean could become a hurricane later today. Weakening is expected on Friday.”

The storm may drop 1 to 3 inches of rain on Bermuda, the center said. Swells generated by the storm are affecting the island nation and the southeastern U.S. coast, “causing life- threatening surf and rip currents.”

Sean is expected to pass about 100 miles northwest of Bermuda on Nov. 11, where a tropical storm warning has been issued, according to a forecast yesterday by the Bermuda Weather Service. The system will probably have weakened back to a tropical storm by the time it nears Bermuda, according to the U.S. center’s forecast track.

Tropical storm-strength winds reach out about 255 miles from Sean’s core. The system is moving north at 8 mph, the center said.
