British Open Prize Money 2010:The winner of this month’s British Open at St. Andrews will receive 850,000 pounds ($ 1.3 million) after officials largest cash prize for the first time in three years.

The prize oldest major golf championship will be 4.8 million pounds, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, said in a statement. It was 4.2 million in the last three championships, with the winner receiving £ 750,000.

“The British Open is at the forefront of world golf, and it is appropriate that our prize fund reflects the position in the game,” said R & A chief executive Peter Dawson. “In the past 18 months we have had to take into account the weakened position of the pound against the U.S. dollar and the euro and we have increased our prize money accordingly.”

Since mid-2007, the pound has fallen 25 percent against the dollar and 19 percent against the euro.

The 150th Anniversary Open Championship will be played July 15 to 18 at St. Andrews in Scotland. Stewart Cink U.S. is the defending champion.
