Mayan CalenderMayan Calender, While New Year celebrations rock throughout the world, there is a completely different world that believes that this is the last New Year party. Those people are gathering in large numbers to Mayan sites in Mexico and Honduras.

Doomsday countdown clocks are ticking in those countries where, according to a so-called Mayan prediction, the world will end in 2012. The clocks are set to hit zero on December 21, 2012.

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, next year’s winter solstice marks the end of a 144,000-day cycle. This cycle, which begins at the mythical Maya creation date, has already been repeated 12 times. The 13th will end in 2012, capping a full 5,200-year Mayan cycle of creation. The talk is that a rogue planet that has been dubbed “Nibiru” or “Planet X” is supposedly aimed at Earth and will hit the Earth on December 21, 2012.

However, many scholars and scientists say that there is no evidence and call such theories ridiculous. An expert at NASA said that if such a planet was headed towards Earth by Dec. 21, 2012, it would already be visible to the n*ked eye.

“Nibiru is ridiculous because it doesn’t exist,it never existed as anything other than a figment of the imagination by pseudo-scientists who don’t seem bothered by a complete lack of evidence,” astronomer Don Yeomans, manager of NASA’s Near-Earth Object program office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California told.

The Mayan predictions though has no certain proof of its happening, has generated good business at least for Honduras and Mexico. The president of Honduras recently joined the Mayan community celebrations to kick off the countdown.

Street vendors in Mexico City who make their living as traditional healers or selling Mayan calendars and Aztec souvenirs say that they are skeptical that the world is going to end any time soon, but say there may be benefits from all the hype. More than 50 million tourists are expected to visit Mayan sites during 2012 and paying for the commercial sensationalism.

The Dubai-based fashion chain Splash has launched a calendar inspired by a doomsday forecast based on the Mayan calendar.
