Lone Ranger 2012Lone Ranger 2012, It’s finally official. Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films will start shooting “The Lone Ranger” in New Mexico in February, with Johnny Depp as the Native American Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid, aka The Lone Ranger.

The production had already gotten under way in 2011 when Disney pulled the plug, balking at the $200 million plus budget. The blogosphere lit up with word it was on again. Finally in November, Nick Maniatis, director of the New Mexico Film Office, gave a preliminary announcement to an industry gathering in November that the production was heading toward the state after all.

Gov. Susana Martinez and the state Film Office said the production will shoot in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Shiprock and other locations through the middle of August 2012. Despite stating in October that Louisiana offered a better deal on incentives, Bruckheimer, the film’s producer, said the producers couldn’t be happier to bring “The Lone Ranger” to New Mexico.

“The state’s world-class crews, local talent and spectacular locations will be critical in helping us take this iconic story and legendary characters to new heights,” he said in a news release.

Martinez, who sparred with the film industry over the past year before voicing support for the sector, said the production proves the film industry is alive and well in New Mexico.

“This administration is committed to fostering productive relationships with film studios so we can continue to offer our talented workforce and breathtaking backdrops for major productions,” she said in the release. “As we continue to build upon our reputation as a premier film production center, we are pleased to welcome ‘The Lone Ranger’ to the state.”
