The Bernie Dance, After defeating Dulaney High School on Tuesday night in the game of Class 4A North Region quarterfinals, it seemed that the Perry Hall High School boys soccer team would not be playing in the semifinal game against James Hubert Blake school tomorrow. That seemed to change Friday morning.

After the families of the players on the team emailed Dulaney Perry Hall home saying Perry George Roberts Hall players did a dance with lewd and suggestive movements at the end of Tuesday’s game, Roberts decided that his team will lose his next play- off the game, ending his season. However, after pressure from parents and students, and extensive media coverage of events, Roberts decided to withdraw its decision and allow the team to play the game.

Perry Hall coach, Pete talked about the incident EIBNER on WBAL radio Friday morning. EIBNER said seven or eight players on his team did a dance called the “Bernie”, which mimics the movements made by the character of Bernie in “Weekend at Bernie’s” movies. The dance is to lean back and arm swing.

“Was it high class? It was not silly? Yes Was it malicious? No,” said EIBNER. “I am ashamed that children did, but I know it was not to mock the other team. They were just celebrating.”

Parents felt Roberts Dulaney said the actions of the players were disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. Roberts spent a day reading emails and talking with players and coaches before deciding on the team shall forfeit the game this weekend. However, shortly before noon today reversed its decision.

“After more research on the behavior of the Perry Hall team football after winning the game with the Dulaney High School last Tuesday, November 1st, I have decided to withdraw my statement to give the team’s participation in the Regional State of the semifinals, “said Roberts. “The intention of my original decision not to punish the team, but to preserve the dignity and character-based education in athletics. Perry Hall High School does not now and not in the future approve unsportsmanlike behavior. Other appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. I look forward to working with students and parents to continue to highlight the best of Perry Hall High School. “
