Tenna Marie, (AP) – A publicist said Motown singer Teena Marie, who was known as the “Queen of Ivory Soul,” died at the age of 54.

The confirmation came Sunday publicist Jasmine Vega, who worked with Teena Marie on her latest album. Her manager, Mike Gardner, has also confirmed her death to CNN.

Marie has developed a lasting legacy and her hits silky soul hits like “Lovergirl,””Square Biz “and” Fire and Desire “with her mentor Rick James.

It certainly was not the first white act to sing soul music. However, it was probably the most talented and respected, and he was fully adopted by black audiences.

(This version corrects APNewsNow. Corrects to show Mary was not the first Motown act white)
