Temasek Review Emeritus, Socio-political website Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) this morning issued an apology to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for an opinion piece and comments posted on its website which it admitted “contained words that are defamatory”.

In the apology, Mr Richard Wan – one of TRE’s five editors, but the only one based in Singapore – acknowledged that the offending post entitled “PAP-government is full of ironies”, dated Feb 16, had meant that Mr Lee was instrumental in securing the appointment of his wife, Madam Ho Ching, as chief executive officer of Temasek Holdings for nepotistic motives.

Mr Wan, who signed off the apology, admitted and acknowledged that the allegation was false and baseless. He apologised for causing Mr Lee distress and embarrassment.

Said Mr Wan in the apology: “(Mr Lee’s lawyers) Drew and Napier were kind enough to provide TRE with information pertaining to the appointment of Mdm Ho Ching, which showed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was not involved in the decision making process. As a matter of fact, Mr Lee was against the idea from the onset.

“In light of the information made available to TRE, we would like to offer our sincere apology to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.”

Mr Wan also urged TRE readers to refrain from commenting on Mdm Ho’s appointment at Temasek Holdings as the earlier allegations were untrue and said that it will delete any such allegations posted by anyone on its website.

On Sunday, Mr Lee’s lawyers from Drew and Napier had sent a lawyer’s letter to Mr Wan asking him to retract the offending post and to publish an apology on his website by Friday.
