Ring Of Fire, Dave Pittet certainly one with Johnny Cash.A Nanaimo musician, Pittet does not just play the songs from the man in black. For the past three years, he worked his damndest to evoke the legend of country / rock singer as River near Big Johnny Cash, an act that hit Dusty’s December 11.

The group is as much a musical performance as method acting, at least in the case of its leader. With a gravelly, guttural voice that unmistakably reproduced Cash, Pittet has a mountain of effort into his performance. He adapted his hair, posture and clothing on it.

Most groups cover depends solely on nostalgia to attract an audience. Big River wants you to imagine the man is there on stage.

Near Johnny Cash have a beginning rather banal five years ago and the biopic Walk the Line was in theaters. Pittet girlfriend suggested they see about six months after hitting the multiplexes – a long life in theaters for a movie.

Johnny Cash tour through the West sees Pittet. In November, he played concerts in Langley, Calgary and Vancouver. Whistler after he goes to Crofton, Slave Lake, Cold Lake and Mount Washington, playing sold-out concerts along the path. It takes him about Mars and then he said he is booked solid bars, rodeos, casinos and sites from the road.

A shy boy by his own admission, it is truly in his place on stage.

“Johnny said in an interview once he was more comfortable in front of 10,000 people from 10,” said Pittet. “If you put me on stage, 10 people are harder for me than 10,000.

“It’s another thing when a 70-year comes to you and says, I saw Johnny Cash when I was 10 years old and you’re as good as him every day of the week.”

Saturday’s performance will mark Pittet second trip to Whistler in his life. His first was a ski trip five years ago and is looking forward to playing in and around the mountain again.

Johnny Cash song is the best, but to me there’s no question: “Ring of Fire.” The song has all of Cash’s passion, and it reflects the relationship of Cash and his soon-to-be wife, June Carter, who co-wrote it with Merle Kilgore. June was agonizing over falling in love with Cash, a drug addict and alcoholic as well as a married man. Click on for the video and something you may not know about the song. Cash, a father of five, was not the first person to record the song. Anita Carter, June’s sister, did it first.
