Stuart ApplebyStuart Appleby, AP – Stuart Appleby opportunity was not nerves, as he started to run real estate in the battle for golf’s magic number 59.

The Australian birdied the last three holes with putts of 15 feet or less on Sunday to become the fifth player to reach the PGA Tour record low throughout the year and win the Classic Greenbrier by a shot.

He also broke a four-year drought without a victory when the third round leader Jeff Overton was on the verge of making a long birdie try at the par-3 18 that would have forced a playoff.

“I was very comfortable,” said Appleby. “It’s a nervous thing to participate in. I had many opportunities and I did. It was great to do that to win the tournament.”

11 Appleby generally low at the Old White Course put him on 22 under. Overton, playing three groups behind Appleby, shot 67 to finish at 21 under.

Appleby round came less than a month after Paul Goydos shot a 59 in the John Deere Classic.

The other 59 were fired Al Geiberger in the 1977 Memphis Classic, Chip Beck in the 1991 Las Vegas Invitational and David Duval in the 1999 Bob Hope Classic.

Appleby feat overthrew the record of 60 set by Sam Snead in 1950 and matched by JB Holmes on Saturday.

U.S. Senior Open: Bernhard Langer shot a final round at 3-67 and took advantage of a critical error Fred Couples’ to complete a transatlantic double and win huge U.S. Senior Open Championship.
