Steinway & Sons, Sir Paul McCartney has organized the work of restoring a piano used by several legends of Motown when he tried to play the instrument during a trip to the museum of the disc label.

The former Beatle wanted to show their musical skills in the 1877 Steinway grand piano during a visit to the Motown Historical Museum in Michigan during the summer after learning that he had been played by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder.

Officials advised the piano was no longer in working order, so he offered to help get the historical piece restored to its former glory.

The museum CEO Audley Smith, Jr. tells The Detroit News, “I was disappointed when we said we did not play.”

McCartney got in touch with Steinway & Sons restorers in, who are committed to fix the instrument.

A company spokesman says, “Steinway & Sons is an honor to restore the historic Steinway piano that was used by legends such as Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder – and do it in the same factory in New York, where it was originally built in 1877.

“We are particularly proud, as a U.S. company to help the Motown Museum in preserving the legacy of the Motown record label, whose artists and albums played such a vital role in one of the great eras of American music.”
