Spy EquipmentSpy Equipment, A cancer researcher of international renown used his work at a British laboratory to steal signs and equipment in an espionage case of the Cold War.

Newly discovered intelligence documents in Prague shows that in the 1980 Jiri Bartek, then a researcher at London’s Imperial Cancer Fund Research, worked for the StB, Czechoslovakia’s secret intelligence service.

Operating under the code name of Raki, Bartek used his position at the clinic to steal the material and scientific equipment then available in communist Czechoslovakia. He gave the stolen secret agents in London who smuggled out the country.

Medical equipment was hidden in sports bags and packed in living tissue flasks filled with ice.

“Raki is not afraid of risk. He is brave and willing to get the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic technology and cool stuff,” Schwarz wrote Dusan, his spy chief, in a file 1984.

The documents reveal that “Raki” may have been just one of dozens of spies Czechs using scientific positions in the West as a cover for espionage. The former spy, now Dr. Bartek, a scientist in cancer research based in Denmark, admitted he had worked for the secret police.

“Yes, I worked (the StB), but did not harm anyone,” said the Czech daily MF Dnes, but declined to elaborate on what he had stolen.
