Sponge Bacteria

Sponge Bacteria, Bacteria are the main cause of sickness and food-borne illness in most people. So, to decrease your risk of getting sick, it’s good to know where germs may lurk for long periods of time.

There are certain places that make for good breeding grounds for bacteria. Cloths, sponges and wet carpets are just a few places. Dr. Susan Rehm is an expert on infectious diseases at Cleveland Clinic and says certain places make a good breeding ground for bacteria. “Areas that are soft, that are porous, and I’ll add areas that are at room temperature or higher. These are all things that support the growth of bacteria.”

Dr. Rehm says things like cloth, sponges, and wet carpets are excellent living places for bacteria. They should be cleaned regularly, especially if they begin to smell. Washing a sponge or a cloth in bleached water, or periodically putting them in a dishwasher will reduce the bacteria.

Money is another surface upon which bacteria can live for quite some time. And Dr. Rehm says there’s a reason you want to keep your bathroom clean. Dr. Rehm says, “That’s partially because of the toilet, partially because of the sink. And then the tub and other areas that are wet are areas where these germs can proliferate and we can pick them up.”

Dr. Rehm says routine will keep the bathroom bacteria to a minimum, but she suggests wearing rubber gloves while you’re cleaning.
