Social Security ChecksSocial Security Checks, U. S. Senator Joe Manchin (DW.Va.) wrote a letter to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, stressing the importance of keeping our promise to older Americans and making Social Security a priority if Washington should fail to reach an agreement the debt ceiling on August 2.

“If the worst happens, and Washington does not do what is right and reach agreement on the debt ceiling, families should not pay the price. I urge you to ensure that this country maintains its confidence in Social Security recipients and continues to send Social Security checks, “said Sen. Manchin. “I came to Washington to fix things and do the right thing for the next generation, not the next election. I truly believe that we must work together to resolve the debt crisis, not to engage in scare tactics to win political points . not only wrong, it is unacceptable that politicians use threats to scare our seniors. ”

Senator Manchin believes that Social Security is a vital program, especially since almost half a million residents of West Virginia receive Social Security payments, and for many people, their Social Security checks are the only source of income.

The full text of the letter from Senator Manchin included below:

Dear Secretary Geithner

As you know, I think this great nation must prioritize based on our values. In my eyes, the highest priority must be seniors who belong to the greatest generation. We must make clear that for the elderly, Social Security is a promise you can count.

If the worst happens, and Washington does not do what is right and reach agreement on the debt ceiling, families should not pay the price. I urge you to ensure that this country maintains its confidence in Social Security beneficiaries and continues to send Social Security checks.

I came to Washington to fix things and do the right thing for the next generation, not the next election. I truly believe that we must work together to resolve the debt crisis, not to engage in scare tactics to win political points. Not only wrong, it is unacceptable that politicians use to scare the threats to our seniors.

Looking ahead, I’ll keep working hard every day with the Republicans and Democrats to reach a common sense solution to our crisis of debt – getting spending under control and is based on fiscal equity.

This is a great nation, we all have the chance to be part of. I hope and believe we can live up to the greatness of the American people and reach an agreement responsible is right for West Virginia, the nation and the next generation.

With warmest regards,

Senator Joe Manchin III
