Shrove Tuesday Pancakes, Christ the King Lutheran Church in Peachtree Corners is celebrating Shrove Tuesday this week with a pancake cook-off and live music.

Shrove Tuesday celebrates the last chance to feast before Lent begins, according to the BBC. The pancake tradition roots back historically because the dish used all the eggs, fat and milk that couldn’t be eaten during Lent, thus giving it the monikers of Pancake Day and Fat Tuesday.

So, to honor the church’s annual tradition of Shrove Tuesday, Christ the King invites the public to sample the many different types of pancakes they will serve.

“Over the past several years, different groups in the church along with our staff members have developed a friendly cooking competition,” said the Rev. Dr. Brian Ballard, senior pastor of Christ the King, in a press release. “We have everything from Scandinavian pancakes to fruit-filled pancakes to the tried-and-true original version, plus all the trimmings.”

In addition to the feast, the Peachtree Symphonic Winds Combo will also perform a set of musical favorites.

“Our members have enjoyed their music for years, and we’re all looking forward to their ensemble playing the very best of Dixieland and Broadway,” Dr. John Marsh, the church’s director of music ministries. “It’s a program the whole family will enjoy.”

The event is open to the public and begins Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. Pancakes will be served at the start of the evening and music will follow at 7 p.m. There is no charge for the concert, but a goodwill offering will be collected for the youth of the church.

Christ the King is located at 5575 Peachtree Parkway in Peachtree Corners.
