Serena Williams US OpenSerena Williams US Open, Sloane Stephens and Vania King – both outside the Top 100 – seeding upset in U.S. Open on Thursday, giving the U.S. five women in the third round, most of her since 2004. The 106th-ranked Stephens, an 18-year-old Los Angeles, beat the 13th-seeded Shahar Peer 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Stephens is the youngest woman left in the draw and never won a Grand Slam match until this week. She is the daughter of the 1988 NFL offensive rookie of the year John M. Stephens.

King 103rd-ranked 22-year-old, who divides her time between Florida and California, eliminated No. 29 Jarmila Gajdosova, 6-2, 6-0.

Stephens and King join Serena Williams, Christina McHale and Irina Falconi in the third round. Eight Americans did far in 2004.

No. 28 Williams beat Michaella Krajicek, 6-0, 6-1 in 49 minutes. Among other women’s matches, No. 7 Francesca Schiavone won 6-1, 6-1 win over Mirjana Lucic, and top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki defeated Arantxa Rus 6-2, 6-0, Wozniacki will face Rey in the next round.

In the men, the top-seeded Novak Djokovic slipped to a 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 win over Carlos Berlocq, No. 3, Roger Federer defeated Dudi Sela 6-3, 6-2, 6 -2, No. 8 Mardy Fish U.S. Malek Jaziri defeated qualifier, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, No. 9 Tomas Berdych defeated Fabio Fognini 7-5, 6-0, 6-0, and beat Juan Carlos Ferrero No. 7Gael Monfils by 7-6 (7-5), 6-7, 5-7 (7-5), 6-4, 6-4.
