Seattle Snow StormSeattle Snow Storm, Seattle may receive 9 inches (23 centimeters) of snow in the next two days, the most in 27 years and possibly one of the 10 worst snowfalls in the city’s history, according to forecasters.

A storm is expected to drop 5 to 9 inches tomorrow into Thursday, when the snow may change to rain, said Dustin Guy, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle.

“If we get 7 or more inches in a 24-hour period, this has the potential to be one of the top 10 storms of all time,” Guy said by telephone. “It is going to create a very messy situation, as you can imagine.”

Winter storm warnings and weather advisories have been posted across the Pacific Northwest from Bellingham, Washington, to Eureka, California, including Seattle and Portland, Oregon, according to the weather service. The warnings stretch eastward into Idaho and Montana.

Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning for Vancouver, British Columbia, where about 4 inches of snow may fall before the storm ends.

In November 1985, two storms left about 8 inches of snow on Seattle, according to Tom Kines, expert senior meteorologist with AccuWeather Inc. in State College, Pennsylvania.

A snow and ice storm in 1996 shut down the city’s Metro for the first time in its history, according to the Seattle Office of Emergency Management website. The resulting freeze and snowmelt contributed to flooding and landslides for a week.
