SEAL Team 6

SEAL Team 6, SEAL Team 6, the elite US special forces team which carried out last year’s raid on Osama bin Laden, was involved in the rescue of two aid workers in Tuesday night’s successful operation in Somalia.

The team worked alongside other Special Operations Forces to rescue 32-year-old American Jessica Buchanan and 60-year-old Dane Poul Thisted, FOX News Channel confirmed.

A senior military source said the Somalia raid did not necessarily involve the same individuals from SEAL Team 6 that were involved in the successful storming of bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan in May last year.

The rescue mission saw at least six helicopters fly in over central Somalia to surprise the kidnappers and retrieve the pair. The two aid workers were abducted in October while working for a Danish refugee organization.

The Pentagon said the timing of the raid was influenced by Buchanan’s deteriorating health. A spokesman said Buchanan was suffering from a “pre-existing condition” that had become “potentially life-threatening” since her capture.

The assault team landed in Somalia early evening local time Tuesday, and the mission was completed “hours later,” the Pentagon said. No American forces were injured in the operation.

Nine captors were killed during the raid, according to a statement issued by the United States Africa Command.
