Russ Feingold, MILWAUKEE-The turnout was heavy Tuesday in a neighborhood of mostly African-American in the west of Milwaukee, where many voters turned out to express their support for a man, not on the ballot: President Barack Obama.

Three-term Democratic Senator Russ Feingold will have very strong participation in Democratic strongholds like this if it will take Republican Ron Johnson, a manufacturer of plastics from Oshkosh, who is leading by between five and 10 points in recent polls.

A brand of anti-Democratic sentiment greets drivers entering the city in the form of a poster condemning liberal bias in the media.

But here at a polling place within the brown brick Metropolitan Baptist Church, Burleigh Street, the feeling was very different.

Sylvester Rucker, a custodian for 61 years, said he voted for Mr. Feingold not because he likes the senator, but because he believes that Obama will have six years to the right of the country and a Democrat on Congress to that.

“Bush dug us into a ditch for eight years,” said Mr. Rucker. “It took two years to lay the groundwork. We will need six more to go.”

Mr. Rucker laughed when asked about his view of the movement of tea party: “They are a hoax,” he said. “The right wing of the Republican Party, nothing more.”

Upon entering the church to cast their vote, Fabian Goins, an unemployed university graduate aged 25, said he supported Mr. Feingold in the hope that the continuation of the Democratic agenda will create more jobs.

“The government needs help right now,” he said. “I know we’re raising the debt, but if we need help we need help.”

Shirley Willingham, a worker with 54 years of age, care of the kids said they did not have to study issues long to make a decision.

“We need health care and child care in this country,” he said. “Democrats are trying to give us that Republicans care.”
