Scott Milanovich

Scott Milanovich, When the Toronto Argonauts finally decided to talk, what they announced was already old news. Former Montreal Alouettes offensive co-ordinator Scott Milanovich is the Toronto Argonauts’ 42nd head coach, the team’s fifth in the past four years.

But even if the rumours that followed Sunday’s Grey Cup scripted the hiring of the 38-year-old on Thursday, it was not going to wipe the smile off the face of general manager Jim Barker, who said he only relinquished his dual role as head coach because he found his guy.

“The only coach in North America that met all the criteria was available and I knew acting promptly would be critical to executing our plan for the future,” Barker said.

But Milanovich’s hiring was all the team announced. Despite seemingly endless speculation last year’s basement dwellers in the East Division would parade out a new offensive and defensive coordinator and a quarterback with a new contract, there was only one open seat between Barker and team president Bob Nicholson.

“This is a realization of a dream for me,” Milanovich said when he finally took his place. And after the former University of Maryland quarterback told the media his new job was the culmination of an itinerant playing career, with stops in the NFL, NFLE, XFL, AFL and CFL from 1996 to 2003, Milanovich momentarily banished the sentiments. In front of the cameras and the microphones, he admitted he has much work to do to bring the Argos from a 6-12 record last season into the 100th Grey Cup that Toronto will host next November. “The next order of business is to get a coaching staff,” he said. “And after that we will start getting the personnel. I think we’ll move quickly.”
