Wfsb 3 Connecticut, Al Terzi, the dean of Connecticut TV anchors who has been in broadcasting for more than a half-century, will leave WFSB-3 at the end of the week, the station and Terzi said Monday.

WFSB General Manager Klarn DePalma and Terzi said they could not reach agreement on a new contract, and Terzi will leave at the end of his contract, Friday, which is also the end of the important February sweeps ratings period.

“We couldn’t reach contractual terms,” said DePalma. “It just didn’t work out.”

Terzi confirmed that in a phone chat after completing the 5:30 news at WFSB. “I made the decision a couple of months ago, and we had the accommodation that I wouldn’t announce it until we get farther into the rating book. I didn’t want it to be a distraction during the book.”

Terzi has been doing the 5 and 5:30 p.m. news at WFSB, and has anchored most of the other shows during his second tenure at WFSB, which began in 1994. Before that, he was the top male anchor at WTNH-8 in New Haven, arriving there in 1980.

Terzi had kind words for DePalma, owner Meredith Broadcasting and the people at WFSB, saying “They’ve been very good … I”m gonna miss them a lot.”

Terzi, 69, did a short stint in Florida during the late 1970s and survived a plane crash there. His first stint at WFSB was from 1968-78.

WFSB said no replacement has been named, and anchor Dennis House will add the 5 and 5:30 shows to his duties for now.

House and co-anchor Denise D’Ascenzo issued a statement Monday evening saying, “We will miss our dear friend and highly respected colleague and we thank him for all his contributions and wisdom over the years.
