Running Wrinkles

Running Wrinkles, Running ranks as one of our favourite means of getting fit and is an ideal way to burn off extra calories from that contraband cream cake.

Five million of us run regularly, but some experts claim it does little to preserve a youthful complexion.

Indeed, cosmetic surgeons are reporting an increase in the number of women seeking treatments for what they have dubbed ‘runner’s face’ — the gaunt and wrinkled appearance they say is a side-effect of too much jogging.

Countless celebrities, including Madonna, Renee Zellweger and Katie Holmes, credit running with transforming their bodies, but its ability to melt away calories at a faster rate than other activities — 500 per hour — means it can have the side-effect of fast fat loss from the face, which can make over-40s look gaunt.
This, combined with the damage running does to the elasticity of the skin, can have a big impact.

According to leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Stephen Mulholland, 25 per cent of his clients are runners seeking to combat the ravages of pavement-pounding.
‘Dedicated runners of normal weight in their mid-40s have haggard, sunken faces’
And New York cosmetic surgeon Dr Gerald Imber cites running as the biggest cause of premature wrinkles after smoking and sunbathing. Imber says: ‘Dedicated runners of normal weight in their mid-40s have haggard, sunken faces.’

The fact that runners spend time outdoors exposed to the elements might also play its part in causing brown age spots and dehydrated skin, which shows wrinkles more quickly, says Bernadette Harte from the Harley Medical Group. So what else can you do to stop the problem?

In America, some runners have taken to wearing plastic ‘chin slings’ that are placed under the jaw, suspended between the earlobes, and are said to minimise drooping jowls and turkey neck.
