Rosebowl Parade

Rosebowl ParadeRosebowl Parade, If you turn on your television today and expect to settle in and watch the Tournament of Roses Parade and the six bowl games that you would normally enjoy on January 1st, think again. No Rose Parade. No bowl games. None. At least not until January 2nd.

Since New Year’s Day is falling on a Sunday, that means it’s the last week of regular season NFL play and that all things related to NCAA Football are moved to the official federal holiday of January 2nd.

This is not a case of the NFL pushing college football aside. Rather, the Rose Parade has been prohibited from taking place on a Sunday since the 1890’s. The parade founders chose to never march on a Sunday out of fear that the noise from the parade would spook the horses tied up outside of churches.

So whenever New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday the Rose Parade, and the Rose Bowl game are moved to Monday. Television, big money and yes, the NFL, have made it more lucrative for the NCAA to follow suit and move the college slate away from NFL games.

So the bad news for college football fans is that you’ll have to wait until Monday. The good news for NFL fans is that your normal Sunday schedule won’t be adversely affected. So basically all football fans win by getting two action-packed days of football during the three day holiday weekend.
