Outdoor Gear StoreOutdoor Gear Store, REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.), a national outdoor gear and clothing store, and announced plans to issue 4.2 million this year to nonprofit organizations across the country who work to preserve and maintain natural areas through active volunteer programs.

“Rei continued grant support and participation of volunteers has helped to improve several of our volunteer programs and establish PVPLC as a leader in local conservation and environmental awareness in our community.”

“At REI, we encourage our partners and customers who enjoy the outdoors to play an active role in the care of these places,” said Kevin Hagen, director of corporate social responsibility of REI. “We are honored to partner with hundreds of nonprofit organizations dedicated to share a similar mission and whose programs enable us to expand these efforts to the trails, waterways and parks throughout the country.”

The company appoints a three per cent of operating profits last year to its annual grants program. Because REI employees have the most direct connection to local nonprofit organizations, store employees nominate organizations in their local community. REI invites candidates to apply for grants. Nonprofit organizations shall be eligible outdoor actively promote volunteerism through programs such as hands-on trail building or restoration events.

“The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy [PVPLC] manages 1,600 acres of open space and 42 miles of roads with the help of thousands of volunteers and the generous contributions of REI,” said Adrienne Bosler associated PVPLC custody of a receiver REI grants since 2007. “Rei continued grant support and participation of volunteers has helped to improve several of our volunteer programs and establish PVPLC as a leader in local conservation and environmental awareness in our community.”

2011 applications were made throughout the spring and IER is notifying grant recipients in each of their communities. In the coming months, members and customers can visit your local REI, blog or local REI REI Facebook or Twitter to learn more about REI grant and selected partners to participate. Last year, the company granted 3.7 million and more than 320 nonprofit organizations across the country.

Throughout the year, REI stores to expand its partnerships with nonprofit organizations outdoors by promoting community events, increase visibility with customers REI and, in some cases, lending gear and provide grants products.
