Rio De Janeiro Carnival, Rio de Janeiro’s carnival contest is ending with a bang, with hundreds of dancers and performers taking to the Sambadrome stadium to show off their moves and costumes in front of tens of thousands of spectators.

Almost 80,000 crowded into the arena as the city’s elite samba schools paraded for their second and last nights of the competition element of the festival over Monday and Tuesday.

Judges were scoring the troupes on their dancing, costume, floats and musical performances, with a system of leagues based on their performances.

Themes ranged from London and fairytales to the Olympics, which will take place in Rio in 2016.

Judges will announce this year’s champion on Ash Wednesday, when the pre-Lenten festivities close.

Over two million people crowd the streets of the Brazilian city every year, making the Rio Carnival the world’s largest street party.

As well as the main competition in the Sambadrome, hundreds of other parades and venues draw in throngs of crowds from across the world.
