Ridley Scott, The “prequel or sequel” to acclaimed director Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner that is “aggressively in development” at Alcon Entertainment will have to wait until Scott has a little free time. Scott was originally planning on following his return to the world of Aliens in his latest movie, Prometheus, with a return to the near-future dystopia populated by “Replicants.” Now Deadline has revealed that the director has “committed to make” Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy’s script The Counselor his next movie.

Described as “No Country for Old Men on steroids,” The Counselor is set in the American Southwest in modern times. It centers on a respected lawyer who tries to make a little extra money by dabbling in the drug trade. Of course, that doesn’t turn out too well and he quickly finds himself in way over his head. According to Deadline, Scott is already “talking to a number of high-profile actors” about the movie, but he might choose Michael Fassbender, who he just worked with on Prometheus, to headline the cast.

The Counselor could turn out to be one of the fastest movies to go from spec script to principal photography in Hollywood history. McCarthy, whose books have been turned into such movies as The Road, All the Pretty Horses and No Country for Old Men, only turned in the script for The Counselor in December and Scott — among other directors — began circling last month. Now, Scott has pushed aside the new Blade Runner to make The Counselor a priority and the movie could go into production as early as May 1st.
