Shanksville Pa, NEW YORK (AP) – In New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, Americans have paused today the ninth anniversary of the attacks of September 11 mark.

In a three-hour ceremony at Ground Zero, relatives read the names of the people slain in the 2752 World Trade Center. Bells tolled, bagpipes played and roses were placed in a reflecting pool for a memorial.

Then protesters began to gather for rallies for and against a proposed Islamic center and mosque two blocks from ground zero.

At the Pentagon, where 184 people died, President Barack Obama urged Americans to mark the anniversary by practicing tolerance and embracing the diversity of the nation.

The president said that the highest honor that we can spend those lost was “faithful to who we are as Americans.” He said we should not “the freedoms we cherish or Hunker down behind walls of suspicion and mistrust to sacrifice.”

Michelle Obama First Lady Laura Bush and her predecessor spoke at a memorial service in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, for the 40 passengers and crew who died aboard Flight 93.
