Purdue University, 280 machines are still operational, just a little dimmer now. Assistant Director of Food Stores Hardy Dave has worked with Coca-Cola Enterprises to reduce energy consumption on campus.

“I did a little research and found in other universities did not really drop in sales when they turn off the lights. This initiative has saved about 7,000 and consumption of electricity for the universityā€¯, said Hardy.

Hardy said there is not only a monetary economy in turning off lights; 87.000 pounds of carbon are emitted into the air. The stickers are placed on the machine to let people know that it is still fully functional.

“It was a good thing,” said Hardy.

Electricity savings is an area of the university seeks to save. Green Week highlights all aspects of energy conservation and recycling.

“We encourage people to think about the sustainability of the environment during Green Week, but we really want the practice to become a habit in their daily lives throughout the year,” said Gary Evans, Director Purdue grounds.

Evans said the recycling bins on campus have been well received by students and teachers especially.

“People simply do not have time to pick up recycling containers. We really tried to saturate the campus with containers for recycling as we can, “said Evans.

According to Evans, Purdue has reduced the amount of waste it sends to landfills by about 750 tonnes over the last two years.

“It saves Money University. We pay and 36 per tonne for each tonne of waste we take to landfill. It just makes good business sense to give priority to recycling over garbage in the management of our waste streams too, “said Evans.

Purdue’s Green Week runs until Friday. The university has planned events throughout each day for the rest of the week.
