Red Hot Chili Peppers 2012 TourRed Hot Chili Peppers 2012 Tour, As 2011 drew to a close, new concert tours from some of the top artists of the last 30 years stepped into the spotlight of TicketNews’ exclusive events rankings, compiled from December 1-31.

Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto Tour had the best debut of all the new tours this month, finishing at No. 2. The group will embark on the 31-date North American tour in April to support their 2011 album of the same name. In addition to Coldplay, tickets to the Red Hot Chili Peppers (No. 4), Neil Diamond (No. 5) and the joint tour from Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw (No. 6) all went on sale during December, catapulting each to the top of the rankings.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular (No. 7) and Trans-Siberian Orchestra (No. 10) have each reached the seasonal end of the line and concluded their holiday schedules. TSO may have a shot at rejoining TicketNews’ event rankings in a few months, when the orchestra begins its Beethoven’s Last Night Tour in March.

December seemed like the month where sports events could once again rise to the top of the rankings with the NBA (finally) beginning its season, and the NFL and NCAA football starting their postseasons. But that did not turn out to be the case, as concerts and theatre events outpaced all but the New York Knicks (No. 12) for Top 20 finishes.

Events to Watch in January:

— Van Halen recently announced that they will launch a 2012 tour that
will feature David Lee Roth on lead vocals. Although no public dates
have been announced yet, initial ticket sales will begin January 10,
according to the band’s official Web site.
— January will mark the first full month of the NBA schedule, so larger
market teams like the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers could join
the Knicks in the rankings.
— The BCS Championship Game between Alabama and LSU will take place on
January 9, but its December ticket sales only landed it at No. 26 —
14 percent behind the No. 20 event. But as anticipation grows closer
to game day, sales are expected to strengthen enough to place the BCS
higher in January’s rankings.
